I’ve been deeply immersed in the AI dilemma for the past year. The 2020 Netflix documentary did not forewarn us about social media. This is its sequel, playing out in real-time, on steroids.
I’ve read the reports. I’ve talked to the people building this stuff. And frankly, it’s a mess.
We’re in a “race to recklessness,” and most of us are just passengers. Big Tech is rapidly progressing, driven by billions of dollars in investment and a geopolitical rivalry, with minimal consideration for slowing down.
They’re selling us a ticket to the future, but they haven’t finished building the plane.
So today, I’m not going to sell you another AI tool. I’m going to give you a map of the territory. No jargon. No hype. This is just the gods-honest truth about what’s happening and what it means for you.
Remember when social media was just for posting vacation photos?
It took nearly a decade for us to realize the “race for engagement” was rewiring our brains, polarizing society, and making it impossible to know what’s true.
With AI, that timeline has collapsed from years to months.
Tristan Harris, the guy from The Social Dilemma, calls this our “Oppenheimer moment.” We’ve built something with the power to fundamentally change everything, but we’re deploying it with the caution of a frat boy on spring break.
He uses a Jenga tower analogy that’s been stuck in my head for weeks:
AI is adding incredible new blocks to the tower: discovering drugs, fighting climate change.
AI is also pulling out foundational blocks from the bottom: trust, truth, and security.
The whole damn tower is wobbling.
The scariest part? The builders don’t even fully understand what they’ve built. These models have “emergent capabilities”—they learn skills they were never taught. One minute they’re writing poems, the next they’re figuring out how to blackmail engineers to ensure their own survival.
No, I’m not kidding. That actually happened.
This isn’t about some far-off sci-fi future. This is about the ground crumbling under our feet, right now.
So, why the mad dash? Three reasons:
The Double Exponential Curve: AI isn’t just getting better. The rate at which it’s getting better is getting better. Progress is so fast that experts are consistently wrong, underestimating development by a factor of four. What they thought would take years is happening in months.
The Investment Tsunami: In 2024, private AI investment in the U.S. hit $109.1 billion. That kind of money demands a return, fast. It creates immense pressure to ship products now and worry about safety later.
The Geopolitical Arms Race: The dominant story in Washington and Silicon Valley is that we’re in a zero-sum race with China. The logic is simple: if we regulate AI, we lose.
But here’s the kicker: China is regulating AI. Aggressively.
Their top tech official said, “If the braking system isn’t under control, you can’t step on the accelerator with confidence.” They’ve removed thousands of non-compliant AI products from the market and are doubling down on safety research.
They’re not racing to be reckless. They’re racing to build a car that can actually be steered.
Meanwhile, we’re so obsessed with having the fastest engine that we might just drive ourselves off a cliff.
The first casualty in this war isn’t jobs. It’s reality.
The term “deepfake” is already outdated. We’re now dealing with “fully multimodal” deception. Think AI-generated video calls, with cloned voices that capture emotional nuance from a 30-second audio clip, backed by fake documents that look 100% real.
This isn’t just for spies and movie studios anymore. Thanks to open-source tools, any troll with a decent graphics card can do it.
The result?
A Hong Kong firm was tricked into sending $25 million to scammers using a deepfaked CFO on a video call.
University students are being targeted with AI-driven sextortion scams, using fake nudes generated from their social media photos.
Nation-states are using deepfaked profiles to infiltrate corporations.
The 2024 “super election year” was supposed to be the “AI-pocalypse.” It wasn’t. The big, election-swinging deepfake never materialized.
But something more subtle happened. The knowledge that anything could be fake gave bad actors the “liar’s dividend.” Now, any real, inconvenient piece of evidence can be dismissed as a deepfake.
The goal is no longer to make you believe a lie. It’s to make you believe nothing.
We make so much noise and doubt that we completely give up on discovering the truth. That’s how you destroy a society without using a single weapon.
Feeling powerless? Don’t.
I refuse to believe we’re just passive consumers in this story. The people building this technology are not gods. They’re business owners. And they respond to pressure.
A global resistance is brewing. It’s taking place in labs, within governments, and among ethicists who raised the alarm years ago.
But the most important part of that resistance is you.
Here’s my playbook for navigating the AI dilemma. It’s not about becoming an expert. It’s about becoming intentional.
Challenge the Narrative of Inevitability. You’ll hear that this is all happening whether we like it or not. That’s a lie designed to make you passive. Technology is a result of human choices and incentives, not a natural phenomenon. We can, and should, demand better choices.
Treat “AI Safety” with Skepticism. The big labs love to talk about safety. But a recent report card gave none of them a grade above a ‘D’ in planning for existential risks—the very risks they say their tech could create. Their talk is cheap. Request transparency and independent, third-party audits, rather than relying solely on PR scorecards they create themselves.
Broaden Your Definition of “Harm.” The conversation is often dominated by sci-fi scenarios. But the harms are already here. Algorithmic bias in hiring is real. Flawed facial recognition is leading to wrongful arrests. Pay attention to the people who are suffering now, not just the potential victims of tomorrow.
Advocate for Friction. The “move fast and break things” model is broken. We need to slow down. Support policies and leaders who prioritize caution over speed. In Europe, the AI Act is already putting guardrails in place. In the U.S., the chaotic patchwork of state laws is inadequate.
Reclaim Your Agency. The whole point of this technology should be to augment human potential, not replace it. Don’t let AI make you a passive content vegetable. Use it as a tool, a co-pilot. But you are still the pilot. You decide the destination.
This is our generation’s challenge. It’s not about stopping AI. It’s about demanding that this incredible power be matched with an equal sense of responsibility.
It’s about grabbing the steering wheel and reminding the people in the driver’s seat that they’re carrying precious cargo.
